Ahmed had won threefold from the Badarpur seat- – first in 2001 on a Trinamool Congress ticket and in 2011 and 2016 as a Congress up-and-comer.
With Ahmed’s downfall, the strength of the resistance Congress in the Assam gathering boiled down to 19. Two sitting MLAs of the gathering had surrendered a month ago and joined the decision Bharatiya Janata Party and another MLA- – previous boss priest Tarun Gogoi- – had died in November.
